Background:

Understanding factors influencing successful drug abuse treatment is crucial for public health.
Treatment setting and staff qualifications are potential determinants of patient retention and program completion.

Purpose of the Study:

To examine the relationship between successful treatment outcomes and staff:client ratios in different drug abuse treatment settings.
To determine if treatment setting or staff qualifications influence outcomes for diverse client groups.

Main Methods:

Analysis of data from 5,405 discharged clients across community mental health centers and dedicated drug abuse treatment programs.
Successful treatment defined as retention for at least 6 months and program completion.
Outcomes compared based on primary drug of abuse (opiate, nonopiate-exclusive of marijuana, marijuana) and client demographics.

Main Results:

No significant outcome differences were found between treatment settings for opiate or nonopiate (excluding marijuana) users.
Community mental health centers showed higher retention for minority marijuana clients; dedicated programs retained White marijuana clients better.
Program emphasis on advanced-degreed professionals versus paraprofessionals did not affect outcomes for any client group.

Conclusions:

Treatment setting plays a differential role in marijuana use disorder treatment success based on race/ethnicity.
Staff qualifications (advanced degrees vs. paraprofessionals) do not appear to influence treatment outcomes.
Further research is needed to understand the mechanisms behind setting-specific retention for marijuana clients.
