The COMmunity of Practice And Safety Support for Navigating Pain (COMPASS-NP) intervention significantly reduced chronic pain interference for home care workers. This pilot study showed promising results for improving pain self-management and workplace safety.
Area of Science:
- Occupational health
- Pain management
- Ergonomics
Background:
- Chronic pain affects home care workers, impacting their work and daily lives.
- Workplace safety and effective pain self-management strategies are crucial for this population.
Purpose of the Study:
- To pilot test the COMmunity of Practice And Safety Support for Navigating Pain (COMPASS-NP) intervention.
- To assess the feasibility and preliminary effectiveness of COMPASS-NP for home care workers with chronic pain.
Main Methods:
- A 10-week online group program was delivered to 19 home care workers with chronic pain.
- The program focused on workplace safety and pain self-management techniques.
- Outcomes included pain interference, ergonomics, pain levels, opioid misuse risk, mental health, sleep, and physical activity.
Main Results:
- Significant reductions were observed in pain interference with life (d = -0.85) and work (d = -0.61).
- Favorable effect sizes were noted for secondary outcomes, including a substantial increase in ergonomic tool and technique utilization (d = 1.47).
Conclusions:
- The COMPASS-NP intervention demonstrated encouraging preliminary effectiveness.
- Further evaluation in a randomized controlled trial is warranted to confirm these findings.
