    Background:

    • Chyluria, chylothorax, and thoracic duct drainage lead to loss of lymphatic elements.
    • Specific immune defects in these conditions are not well understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the immunologic status of patients with longstanding chyluria.
    • To characterize immune defects in lymphopenic patients without opportunistic infections.

    Main Methods:

    • Assessed immunoglobulin levels, antibody response to viral agents, and hypersensitivity.
    • Evaluated T cell subsets (OKT4, OKT8), natural killer (NK) cells, and mitogen stimulation response.

    Main Results:

    • Patients exhibited leukopenia due to decreased lymphocytes, with altered OKT4/OKT8 ratios.
    • Moderate decrease in IgA observed; complement levels were normal.
    • Reduced mitogen stimulation response but normal or increased NK cells; NK activity enhanced by interferon.

    Conclusions:

    • Despite lymphocyte depletion and altered T cell subsets, patients maintain protective immunity.
    • Normal hypersensitivity and interferon-boosted NK cell activity may prevent opportunistic infections and neoplasms.
