  • An exploratory study compared patient cases with positive A-IQI indicators against randomly selected negative control cases.
  • The Institute for Healthcare Improvement Global Trigger Tool was used for structured medical record review to identify AEs.

  • Of 421 chart reviews, 158 AEs were identified, with 70.9% occurring in indicator-positive cases.
  • Indicator-positive cases had a 3.47 times higher relative risk of AEs and a higher proportion of severe events (54.5% vs 15.3%).
  • A-IQI demonstrated a sensitivity of 68.2% and specificity of 69.4% for AE detection.

Conclusions:

  • Positive A-IQI results are associated with a significantly higher incidence and severity of AEs.
  • The findings support the utility of A-IQI in highlighting potential patient safety issues.
  • Further research with larger datasets and more indicators is recommended for comprehensive A-IQI validation.
