For the rural curious: mixed methods evaluation of a rural pharmacy practice elective
1University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy, Duluth, MN, USA. tstratto@d.umn.edu.
A new Rural Pharmacy course was well-received by students, introducing them to rural practice. The course aimed to address the shortage of rural primary care providers by increasing student interest in rural pharmacy.
Area of Science:
- Pharmacy Education
- Rural Health
- Health Workforce Development
Background:
- Rural communities face a shortage of primary care providers, with 20% of the U.S. population residing in these areas.
- Pharmacists are crucial for first-contact care in rural settings, yet only 12% practice rurally.
- The University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy introduced an elective Rural Pharmacy course in 2022 to address this disparity.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the impact of an elective Rural Pharmacy course on student interest in rural practice.
- To assess student perceptions of rural pharmacy practice and culture.
- To explore potential strategies for increasing the number of pharmacists in rural Health Professional Shortage Areas.
Main Methods:
- The course included lectures, guest speakers (rural pharmacists), and student interviews with rural pharmacists.
- Student interest in rural practice was measured using a 1-7 rating scale before and after the course.
- Non-parametric statistics analyzed changes in interest, and reflection papers provided qualitative feedback.
Main Results:
- 45% of the 42 enrolled students had prior rural experience.
- No statistically significant net change in overall rural interest scores was observed.
- Significant shifts included students moving from 'Not Sure' to 'Interested' or 'Very Interested'.
Conclusions:
- The Rural Pharmacy course was positively received by students, indicating its value in pharmacy education.
- Exposure to rural practice and culture, even for students not initially interested, can enhance culturally responsive care for rural patients.
- Interviews with rural pharmacists were a highly impactful component of the course for nearly 60% of students.

Methods for Studying Drug Absorption: In situ
The Doluisio method involves perfusing a prepared segment of a rat's small intestine with a solution of radiolabeled drug and a non-absorbable marker. This helps to differentiate between absorbed and non-absorbed drug concentrations. The intestinal segment is connected at both ends using tubing and syringes,...
