Rous Sarcoma Virus (RSV) and Cancer

5.1K
Rous Sarcoma virus or RSV was discovered by F. Peyton Rous in the year 1911 as a filterable transmissible agent that could cause tumors in chickens. He won a Nobel Prize for this discovery in 1966. His experiments clearly demonstrated that some cancers could be caused by infectious agents and led to the discovery of many more cancer-causing viruses in animals as well as humans.
RSV is a retrovirus that contains two copies of a plus-strand  RNA genome. Its genome consists of four main open...

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Sarcoma Management
  • Healthcare Systems

Background:

  • Sarcoma treatment in specialist centers improves outcomes.
  • Global access to sarcoma expertise is limited, highlighting a need for defined standards.
  • Current definitions of 'specialist' or 'expert' centers are lacking.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To define specialist sarcoma care for patient advocates.
  • To provide a tool for healthcare providers to enhance sarcoma patient care.
  • To establish a framework for recognizing and developing sarcoma expertise globally.

Main Methods:

  • A discussion paper was developed for a workshop at the Sarcoma Patient Advocacy Group Network (SPAGN) 2023 Conference.
  • Expert input was gathered from 75 delegates and the Connective Tissue Oncology Society (CTOS).
  • Core Principles and supplementary Features for optimal sarcoma management were identified.

Main Results:

  • Identified the multi-disciplinary team discussion of every patient as the primary principle of specialist sarcoma care.
  • Outlined principles for accurate diagnosis, safe, high-quality treatment with curative intent.
  • Defined features encompassing healthcare areas, professional involvement, service provision, and R&D needs.

Conclusions:

  • Proposed the term 'Sarcoma Intelligent Specialist Network' to acknowledge expertise globally.
  • The framework allows for adaptation to national/local policies and budgets.
  • A foundation is established for further discussion and local refinement of sarcoma care standards.
