Magnetic resonance imaging T1 mapping can distinguish between normal and malignant tissues in tumors. This quantitative technique shows potential for identifying tumor development stages and micro-metastases.
Area of Science:
- Biomedical Imaging
- Quantitative MRI
- Oncology
Background:
- T1 mapping is a quantitative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique.
- It uses proton relaxation rates to characterize tissues.
- Current applications are common in cardiac imaging, but less explored for oncology.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the application of T1 mapping for characterizing tumor structures.
- To assess the sensitivity of T1 mapping in distinguishing malignant from normal tissues.
- To explore its potential in identifying tumor development and micro-metastases.
Main Methods:
- Utilized a saturation recovery method to acquire T1 maps.
- Applied the technique to two different tumor models.
- Acquired high-resolution images using small voxel sizes, even with reduced signal-to-noise ratios.
Main Results:
- T1 mapping successfully distinguished between normal and malignant tissues.
- Significantly different relaxation values were recorded between tumor regions and surrounding tissues (muscle, kidney, spleen).
- Distinct relaxation values were observed between different tumor cell lines.
Conclusions:
- Longitudinal relaxation mapping is sensitive for differentiating normal and cancerous tissues.
- T1 mapping shows potential as a method for 'fingerprinting' tumor development stages.
- This technique may aid in the detection of micro-metastases.
