Completion lobectomy (CL) can successfully treat lung cancer recurrence after segmentectomy. Advanced 4K three-dimensional (3D) endoscopy ensures safe and effective outcomes for this challenging procedure.

Area of Science:

  • Thoracic Surgery
  • Surgical Oncology
  • Minimally Invasive Surgery

Background:

  • Segmentectomy is increasingly adopted for early-stage lung cancer.
  • Recurrence at surgical margins can necessitate further intervention.
  • Completion lobectomy (CL) is a complex procedure following prior segmentectomy.

Observation:

  • A 77-year-old male patient with recurrent lung cancer after S3 segmentectomy was treated.
  • The recurrence was located at the surgical margin one year post-segmentectomy.
  • Completion lobectomy was performed using 4K three-dimensional (3D) endoscopy.

Findings:

  • The completion lobectomy was performed successfully using 4K3D endoscopy.
  • The procedure demonstrated the feasibility of 4K3D endoscopy for complex thoracic surgeries.

  • This case highlights the utility of advanced endoscopic technology in managing post-segmentectomy recurrence.
  • Implications:

    • 4K3D endoscopy offers a safe and reliable approach for completion lobectomy after segmentectomy.
    • Meticulous preoperative planning and precise surgical technique are crucial for successful CL.
    • This approach may improve outcomes for patients experiencing recurrence after lung cancer segmentectomy.
