    Circulating immune complexes (CICs) are common in Kawasaki syndrome, found in 69% of patients. However, their presence did not correlate with disease severity or coronary artery aneurysms.

    Background:

    • Kawasaki syndrome is an acute febrile illness primarily affecting young children.
    • The pathogenesis of Kawasaki syndrome is not fully understood, but immune system dysregulation is implicated.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the prevalence of circulating immune complexes (CICs) in patients with Kawasaki syndrome.
    • To determine if CICs correlate with clinical severity or coronary artery aneurysm formation.

    Main Methods:

    • Sera from 42 patients with Kawasaki syndrome were tested for CICs using Raji cell radioimmune and C1q solid phase assays.
    • Correlation analysis was performed between CIC presence, clinical severity, and coronary artery aneurysm incidence.

    Main Results:

    • Overall, 69% of sera tested positive for CICs (52% by Raji cell assay, 48% by C1q assay).
    • CICs were most frequently detected 2-4 weeks post-illness onset.
    • CIC detection did not correlate with clinical severity or coronary artery aneurysm incidence.

    • Circulating immune complexes are frequently detected in Kawasaki syndrome patients.
