    Summary

Viridans streptococcus is a frequent cause of newborn septicemia, often presenting later than Group B streptococcus. This less virulent pathogen should be recognized in sick neonates.

    Area of Science:

    • Neonatal Medicine
    • Infectious Diseases
    • Microbiology

    Background:

    • Viridans streptococcus is an emerging cause of neonatal septicemia.
    • Group B streptococcus is a well-established cause of neonatal infections.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare the prevalence and clinical presentation of viridans streptococcal and Group B streptococcal septicemia in neonates.
    • To assess the virulence of viridans streptococcus in the neonatal population.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective analysis of neonatal blood cultures over a 6-year period.
    • Comparison of clinical data between neonates with viridans streptococcus and Group B streptococcus septicemia.

    Main Results:

    • Viridans streptococcus was the most frequent streptococcal isolate from neonatal blood cultures.
    • Viridans streptococcal septicemia presented later and had lower rates of respiratory distress and leukopenia compared to Group B streptococcal septicemia.
    • Viridans streptococcus was identified as a significant pathogen in sick neonates.

    Conclusions:

    • Viridans streptococcus is a prevalent cause of neonatal septicemia.
    • Viridans streptococcus appears less virulent than Group B streptococcus.
    • Clinical awareness and consideration of viridans streptococcus are crucial for managing neonatal infections.
