Background:

  • Nasal glial heterotopias (NGH) are uncommon, non-hereditary congenital abnormalities involving heterotopic neuroglial tissue.
  • While typically presenting in infancy, NGH can occur in older children and adults.
  • Imaging techniques like MRI and CT are essential for evaluating potential intracranial extension.

Observation:

  • A rare case presented as a firm, subcutaneous, non-tender, non-reducible midline swelling near the nose root.
  • Clinical, sonological, CT, and MRI evaluations suggested differential diagnoses including encephalocele, NGH, and dermoid.
  • The swelling measured 2 x 2 x 1 cm with bluish-red skin, unaffected by posture or pressure.

Findings:

  • NGH is often misdiagnosed as other conditions such as encephaloceles, teratomas, dermoid cysts, capillary haemangiomas, and desmoids.
  • While imaging aids in diagnosis, surgical excision and subsequent histopathology remain the gold standard for confirming NGH.
