    Summary

Preoperative ceftriaxone prophylaxis significantly reduced surgical site infections in patients undergoing cholelithiasis surgery. This antibiotic intervention prevented wound healing complications in the study group.

    Area of Science:

    • Surgical prophylaxis
    • Infectious disease
    • Clinical microbiology

    Background:

    • Cholelithiasis (gallstones) often necessitates surgical intervention.
    • Surgical site infections (SSIs) are a common complication following abdominal surgery.
    • Antibiotic prophylaxis is a standard measure to prevent SSIs.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy of preoperative ceftriaxone in preventing infectious complications after cholelithiasis surgery.
    • To compare SSI rates between patients receiving antibiotic prophylaxis and those not receiving it.

    Main Methods:

    • Prospective randomized study involving 180 patients undergoing elective cholelithiasis surgery.
    • Intervention group received 2g intravenous ceftriaxone preoperatively.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Control group received no antibiotic prophylaxis.
  • Main Results:

    • Infectious wound healing disturbances occurred in 11% of the control group.
    • No infectious complications were observed in the ceftriaxone prophylaxis group.
    • The observed difference in infection rates was statistically significant.

    Conclusions:

    • Preoperative intravenous ceftriaxone is highly effective in preventing surgical site infections in patients undergoing cholelithiasis surgery.
    • Routine antibiotic prophylaxis with ceftriaxone should be considered for patients undergoing elective cholelithiasis procedures.
    • This strategy significantly improves postoperative wound healing outcomes.
