Summary

Immediate sequential bilateral cataract surgery (ISBCS) offers good refractive outcomes and safety for patients with visually significant cataracts. This study found ISBCS to be predictable and associated with few serious adverse events.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the outcomes of immediate sequential bilateral cataract surgery (ISBCS).
  • To assess refractive predictability and visual results after ISBCS in patients with visually significant cataracts.
  • To determine the incidence of intraoperative and serious postoperative adverse events following ISBCS.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 1335 patients (2670 eyes) undergoing ISBCS.
  • Inclusion criteria: visually significant cataracts and preoperative CDVA ≤20/32.
  • Evaluation of refractive and visual outcomes, and adverse events within three months post-surgery.

  • 50.2% of eyes achieved uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) ≥20/20, and 89.1% achieved ≥20/32.
  • 83.8% of eyes were within ±0.50D of emmetropia; 96.4% within ±1.00D.
  • Low incidence of adverse events: 0.524% intraoperative and 2.996% postoperative events per eye. No bilateral CDVA loss.

Conclusions:

  • ISBCS demonstrates good refractive predictability in patients with visually significant cataracts.
  • The procedure is associated with a low incidence of serious adverse events.
  • ISBCS is a safe and effective surgical option for eligible patients.
