    Summary

    Nonimmunologic fetal hydrops can be linked to maternal theca lutein cysts, potentially caused by high human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) from the placenta. These cysts resolved post-delivery as hCG levels decreased.

    Background:

    • Nonimmunologic fetal hydrops (NIFH) is a serious condition characterized by fluid accumulation in fetal compartments.
    • Theca lutein cysts, also known as hyperreactio luteinalis, are typically associated with high levels of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG).

    Observation:

    • A rare case of NIFH was observed in conjunction with bilateral maternal theca lutein cysts.
    • The hydropic placenta was suspected as the source of elevated hCG production leading to cyst formation.

    Findings:

    • Maternal theca lutein cysts regressed spontaneously following delivery.
    • Declining beta-hCG levels post-delivery correlated with cyst resolution.

    Implications:

    • This case suggests a potential causal link between placental hCG production in NIFH and the development of maternal theca lutein cysts.
    • Understanding this association may aid in the diagnosis and management of NIFH and related endocrine complications.
