Nose and Nasal Cavity01:24

Nose and Nasal Cavity

The nose is composed of an observable exterior segment (external nose) and an internal segment within the skull known as the nasal cavity (internal nose). The external nose, visible on the face, consists of a framework of bone and hyaline cartilage enveloped in skin and muscle and lined with a mucous membrane. This structure is supported by the frontal bone, nasal bones, and maxillary bone and is supplemented by a cartilaginous framework comprising the septal nasal cartilage, lateral nasal...

Area of Science:

  • Veterinary Pathology
  • Comparative Oncology

Background:

  • Chondrosarcomas are malignant tumors arising from cartilage-forming cells.
  • While documented in various species, sinonasal chondrosarcomas are rare in camelids.

Observation:

  • A 14-year-old female llama presented with a three-month history of right maxillary swelling.
  • Clinical signs included mild nasal discharge, abnormal eye retropulsion, and gingival disease.
  • Histopathology revealed pleomorphic, mitotically active neoplastic cells within a chondroid matrix.

Findings:

  • A large, firm, white mass extensively occupied the right infraorbital region, maxilla, nasal conchae, and zygomatic bone.
  • Postmortem examination, cytology, and histopathology confirmed the diagnosis of sinonasal chondrosarcoma.
  • This represents the first reported case of sinonasal chondrosarcoma in a llama.

Implications:

  • Sinonasal chondrosarcoma should be considered in the differential diagnosis for facial deformities in llamas and other New World camelids.
  • This finding expands the known oncological profile of South American camelids.
  • Further research into the incidence and behavior of sinonasal chondrosarcomas in camelids is warranted.
