Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition marked by persistent deficits in social communication and interaction alongside restrictive and repetitive behaviors or interests. ASD is sometimes accompanied by intellectual impairment.
These core symptoms manifest differently among individuals, ranging from mild to severe. The disorder's complexity extends beyond its clinical presentation, encompassing a diverse range of biological, cognitive, and sociocultural influences.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate age-related CC size in individuals with ASD.
  • To compare CC size in ASD with age-matched healthy controls.
  • To analyze CC development between ages 2 and 18 years.

Main Methods:

  • Structural MRI data from 97 males with ASD and control data.
  • CC segmentation into 7 subregions using ITK-SNAP software.
  • Analysis of CC total length, volume, and subregion dimensions; statistical comparisons using Pearson's correlation and t-tests.

Main Results:

  • CC total length positively associated with age in ASD (r=0.43).
  • Anterior midbody length showed a positive association with age (r=0.41).
  • Individuals with ASD had shorter genu and splenium lengths/heights than controls.

Conclusions:

  • ASD exhibits an abnormal CC developmental trajectory.
  • Genu and splenium structures are particularly affected in ASD.
  • Findings suggest underlying pathophysiological mechanisms in ASD warrant further study.
