This scoping review maps the growing research on art-based interventions for Indigenous health and wellness. It identifies beneficial components of these interventions to inform future culturally appropriate mental health programs.
Area of Science:
- Indigenous Health
- Mental Health Interventions
- Art Therapy Research
Background:
- Indigenous populations face unique health inequalities and social determinants impacting physical and mental well-being.
- Limited availability of culturally appropriate care exacerbates health disparities.
- Art-based interventions are increasingly explored for their potential to benefit Indigenous lives.
Purpose of the Study:
- To conduct a scoping review mapping the existing research on art-based interventions for Indigenous people.
- To identify specific, beneficial components of art-based interventions documented in the literature.
- To inform the co-design of future culturally appropriate art-based mental health and wellness programs for Indigenous communities.
Main Methods:
- Utilizing the Arksey and O'Malley methodological framework, enhanced by Levac et al.
- Comprehensive search of academic databases and grey literature sources.
- Two-step screening process (title/abstract, full-text) by two researchers, with data extraction and charting.
Main Results:
- The review will summarize relevant art-based interventions, their outcomes, and key findings.
- Identification of specific intervention components that have demonstrated positive effects.
- Mapping the current landscape of research to guide future studies and practice.
Conclusions:
- This scoping review is foundational for a research program to co-design pilot art-based interventions.
- Findings will guide the development of culturally safe and effective mental health and wellness support for Indigenous peoples.
- Dissemination through knowledge translation activities with Indigenous organizations and networks is planned.
