Daily tadalafil use for erectile dysfunction did not significantly alter posterior ocular structures. Optical coherence tomography showed no changes in retinal thickness or optic disc measurements after one month of treatment.
Area of Science:
- Ophthalmology
- Pharmacology
Background:
- Phosphodiesterase 5 inhibitors (PDIs) are commonly used for erectile dysfunction.
- Potential ocular side effects of PDIs warrant investigation.
- Tadalafil is a widely prescribed PDI.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the effects of daily tadalafil use on posterior ocular structures using optical coherence tomography (OCT).
- To assess changes in retinal thickness, optic nerve head, and choroidal parameters after one month of tadalafil treatment.
Main Methods:
- Prospective study of 26 patients using 5-mg daily tadalafil for erectile dysfunction.
- Ophthalmological examinations including OCT were performed before and after one month of tadalafil use.
- Measurements included central retinal thickness (CRT), ganglion cell layer + inner plexiform layer (GCL+IPL), peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL), optic disc parameters, and choroidal thickness and vascularity.
Main Results:
- No statistically significant differences were observed in CRT, GCL+IPL, or pRNFL thicknesses in any quadrant after tadalafil use.
- Optic disc head measurements and choroidal thickness remained similar between pre- and post-treatment visits.
- Choroidal vascular parameters, including luminal choroidal area and choroidal vascular index (CVI), showed no significant changes.
Conclusions:
- One month of regular daily tadalafil use for erectile dysfunction did not result in significant alterations to the measured posterior ocular structures.
- These findings suggest tadalafil is safe for the posterior segment of the eye in the short term.
