Area of Science:

  • Orthopaedic Surgery
  • Medical Simulation
  • Virtual Reality

Background:

  • New orthopaedic surgical simulation and virtual reality (VR) training models provide accessible education for trainees.
  • The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the need for remote learning tools in surgical education.
  • Existing simulators range from basic models to advanced VR systems.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the current state of surgical simulation and training techniques in orthopaedic hand surgery.
  • To identify factors influencing the application of these training methods.
  • To highlight areas where hand surgery simulation lags behind other orthopaedic subspecialties.

Main Methods:

  • This narrative review synthesizes existing literature on orthopaedic surgical simulation.
  • It focuses on the application and limitations of VR and other simulation tools in hand surgery training.
  • The review compares the advancement of hand surgery simulation with other orthopaedic subspecialties.

Main Results:

  • Virtual reality simulators have advanced significantly in shoulder and knee arthroscopy training.
  • Simulation tools for orthopaedic hand surgery, requiring high precision, have seen limited development.
  • Factors affecting the application of simulation in hand surgery were examined.

Conclusions:

  • Significant advancements in VR simulation exist for knee and shoulder arthroscopy.
  • Orthopaedic hand surgery simulation technology lags behind other subspecialties.
  • Further development of simulation tools is needed for precise hand surgery training.
