Influence of Parents and Peers on Identity01:23

Influence of Parents and Peers on Identity

49
Adolescence is a pivotal period of identity formation, during which individuals begin to answer questions central to their sense of self, such as "Who am I?" and "Who do I hope to become?" Both parents and peers play critical roles in guiding adolescents through this complex developmental phase.

Self-Discrepancy Theory

18.3K
One influential perspective on what motivates people's behavior is detailed in Tory Higgin's self-discrepancy theory (Higgins, 1987). He proposed that people hold disagreeing internal representations of themselves that lead to different emotional states.

Self-Evaluation: Self-Enhancement and Self-Verification

5.2K
Social psychologists have documented that feeling good about ourselves and maintaining positive self-esteem is a powerful motivator of human behavior (Tavris & Aronson, 2008). In the United States, members of the predominant culture typically think very highly of themselves and view themselves as good people who are above average on many desirable traits (Ehrlinger, Gilovich, & Ross, 2005). Often, our behavior, attitudes, and beliefs are affected when we experience a threat to our...

Psychological and Sociocultural Causes of Schizophrenia01:29

Psychological and Sociocultural Causes of Schizophrenia

83
Schizophrenia, a complex psychiatric disorder, has been historically misunderstood. Early psychological theories attributed its origins to childhood trauma and unresponsive parenting. However, contemporary research largely rejects these notions, favoring the vulnerability-stress hypothesis. This model proposes that individuals with a genetic predisposition to schizophrenia may develop the disorder following exposure to significant environmental stressors. Notably, studies on high-risk...

Theory of Romantic Attachment in Adulthood

43.4K
Attachment is a long-standing connection or bond with others. While Attachment Theory was conceived in developmental psychology to describe infant-caregiver bonding, it's been extended into adulthood to include romantic relationships.

Surveys02:16

Surveys

14.7K
Often, psychologists develop surveys as a means of gathering data. Surveys are lists of questions to be answered by research participants, and can be delivered as paper-and-pencil questionnaires, administered electronically, or conducted verbally. Generally, the survey itself can be completed in a short time, and the ease of administering a survey makes it easy to collect data from a large number of people.

Summary

Pilot Peer Support Programs are not fully facilitating pilot mental health help-seeking. A positive work culture and fair pay encourage pilots to seek support, while depression and anxiety symptoms deter them.

Area of Science:

  • Aviation Psychology
  • Occupational Health
  • Mental Health Services Research

Background:

  • Pilot Peer Support Programs (PPSP) aim to improve mental health help-seeking among commercial pilots in Europe.
  • Limited research exists on factors influencing pilots' engagement with PPSP.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify organizational and individual factors associated with pilots' willingness to approach PPSP.
  • To determine the prevalence of depression and anxiety symptoms in European commercial pilots.

Main Methods:

  • An anonymous web-based survey of 4494 pilots assessed work conditions, health, and flight safety.
  • Logistic regression analysis was used to examine predictors of PPSP approachability.

Main Results:

  • A just culture (OR=2.65), higher pay (OR=1.98), and employment type (OR=0.60) significantly influenced PPSP approachability.
  • Depression (OR=0.62) and anxiety symptoms (OR=0.66) were associated with lower PPSP approachability.
  • Prevalence rates for possible depression were 18% and for anxiety disorders were 23%.

Conclusions:

  • Current PPSP may be insufficient for facilitating help-seeking but hold preventive potential.
  • Findings can inform strategies to enhance pilot mental health support and flight safety.
