[Real-time cerebral echography in meningitis in the newborn infant and infants]
Abstract:
We report echographic findings in 17 patients with meningitis of which 16 were bacterial and the remaining one was due to toxoplasma. The signs more frequently observed have been ventricular dilatation and thickening of cortical sulci with increased echogenicity. Emphasis is made on the usefulness of realtime brain ultrasonography for monitoring of certain meningitis during the acute phase as well as for detection of sequelae later on the clinical course. One of our patients had tuberculous meningitis, and as far as we know, our sonographic follow-up is the first reported so far in this disease.
Insights
Realtime brain ultrasonography reveals key signs like ventricular dilatation in meningitis patients. This imaging technique is useful for monitoring acute phases and detecting long-term complications.
Area of Science:
- Neurology
- Radiology
- Pediatrics
Context:
- Meningitis, an inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord, poses significant diagnostic and monitoring challenges.
- Bacterial meningitis is a common and severe form, requiring prompt and accurate assessment.
- Toxoplasma and tuberculous meningitis represent less common but critical differential diagnoses.
Purpose:
- To describe the echographic findings in patients diagnosed with meningitis.
- To evaluate the utility of realtime brain ultrasonography in managing meningitis and its sequelae.
- To present the first reported sonographic follow-up of tuberculous meningitis.
Summary:
- This study analyzed echographic findings in 17 meningitis patients (16 bacterial, 1 toxoplasma).
- Commonly observed signs included ventricular dilatation, thickened cortical sulci, and increased echogenicity.
- Realtime brain ultrasonography proved valuable for acute phase monitoring and sequelae detection.
Impact:
- Highlights the diagnostic and monitoring capabilities of brain ultrasonography in meningitis.
- Provides initial sonographic data for tuberculous meningitis, a rare but serious condition.
- Emphasizes the role of ultrasound in managing pediatric neurological infections and their long-term outcomes.
