Survival processing enhances memory recall, but information reliability, indicated by Turkish evidentiality markers, does not strengthen this survival processing effect. Memory prioritizes survival relevance over source certainty.
Area of Science:
- Cognitive Psychology
- Evolutionary Psychology
- Linguistics
Background:
- Adaptive memory mechanisms prioritize information crucial for survival and reproduction, leading to the survival processing effect.
- The influence of information reliability on the survival processing effect is not well understood.
- Evidentiality markers in Turkish provide linguistic cues to the source reliability of information (direct vs. indirect).
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate whether the reliability of information, as indicated by Turkish evidentiality markers, modulates the survival processing effect.
- To determine if direct evidentiality markers enhance memory recall for survival-related information compared to indirect markers.
Main Methods:
- Two experiments were conducted using Turkish sentences.
- Participants processed sentences for relevance to survival or nonsurvival (moving) contexts.
- Recall was assessed for sentences with direct and indirect evidentiality markers.
Main Results:
- A robust survival processing effect was observed: survival-related information was better recalled than nonsurvival-related information.
- Evidentiality marker type (direct vs. indirect) did not significantly impact memory retention.
- The survival processing effect remained significant even for information with indirect evidentiality markers.
Conclusions:
- Survival processing enhances memory regardless of information source reliability.
- Memory processing may prioritize survival-relevant information even when its reliability is uncertain.
- Language, specifically evidentiality, interacts with memory but does not alter the fundamental survival processing advantage.
