Knee Joint

The knee joint is the most complicated joint in the body. It consists of three articulations– two tibiofemoral and one patellofemoral. As is characteristic of synovial joints, the knee joint has a thin articular capsule that partially surrounds this joint cavity. Additionally, several ligaments, muscles, and cartilaginous structures support the movement of the knee.

Context:

Revision joint replacement surgery is complex, often involving significant bone defects or instability.
Rotating hinge prostheses are utilized for challenging cases requiring enhanced stability and alignment.

Purpose:

To evaluate the clinical, functional, and radiological outcomes of revision knee replacement using the GMK Hinge (Medacta®) rotational hinge prosthesis.

Summary:

A retrospective study of 36 patients (mean age 72.5 years) undergoing revision knee surgery with a rotating hinge prosthesis.
Etiologies included infection (38.9%), instability (33.3%), aseptic loosening (19.4%), and stiffness (8.4%).
Significant improvements were observed in Knee Society Score (KSS) and Forgotten Joint Score (FJS), with a 16.7% complication rate.

Impact:

The GMK Hinge rotating hinge prosthesis provides a suitable option for complex revision knee arthroplasty.
The study highlights the potential for satisfactory clinical and functional recovery in challenging revision scenarios.
