Endoscopic Procedures II: Colonoscopy

82
The colon, or large intestine, is the final segment of the digestive system. Its primary functions include absorbing water and vitamins produced by gut bacteria and transforming waste from liquid to solid to form stool. In adults, the large intestine is approximately 5 feet long and consists of four main sections:

Assessment of the Gastrointestinal System II: Health Perception Pattern

103
Assessing the gastrointestinal (GI) system is a complex process that begins with collecting subjective data. This data, collected through patient interviews, provides crucial insights into the patient's health history, perception patterns, and lifestyle habits, all contributing significantly to GI health.
Health Perception Patterns
Health perception patterns offer valuable insights into a patient's lifestyle habits and how they may impact their GI health. These patterns include:

Preventive healthcare services keep people healthy via frequent check-ups, screening, and counseling. They primarily aid in disease prevention rather than treating an acute or chronic illness. Preventive treatment also keeps individuals productive and energetic, allowing them to work well into their retirement years. Examples of preventive care services include:

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Public Health
  • Preventive Medicine

Background:

  • Adherence to colorectal cancer (CRC) screening is crucial for program effectiveness.
  • Organized screening programs enhance process quality and adherence but face challenges.
  • Early detection of CRC through screening significantly improves patient outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe adherence and participation patterns in a biennial organized CRC screening program.
  • To evaluate the impact of patient navigators and cellphone reminders on CRC screening adherence.
  • To identify challenges in communication for CRC screening follow-up.

Main Methods:

  • A longitudinal, descriptive study involving 301 eligible subjects for CRC screening.
  • Interventions by trained patient navigators included cellphone communication reminders.
  • Fecal immunochemical test (FIT) kits were provided to all follow-up subjects.

Main Results:

  • A consistent adherence rate of 41.8% was observed, with 126 subjects completing biennial screening.
  • Participation patterns included 41.8% consistent participants, 53.2% inconsistent participants, and 5% never contacted.
  • A total of 747 cellphone calls were made across three intervention phases.

Conclusions:

  • Organized CRC screening programs are vital for early cancer detection.
  • Follow-up interventions, including patient navigator training and reminders, can enhance screening adherence.
  • New strategies are required to address barriers in cellphone-based communication for CRC screening programs.
