Poor mentalizing capacity contributes to emotional difficulties. Emotion dysregulation mediates the link between mentalizing capacity and affective states, leading to negative emotions and reduced positive emotions.
Area of Science:
- Psychology
- Clinical Psychology
- Social Psychology
Background:
- Mentalizing capacity is crucial for emotional regulation.
- Emotion dysregulation is linked to various affective states.
- Understanding the interplay between mentalizing, emotion regulation, and affect is important for mental health.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the relationship between mentalizing capacity and affective states.
- To examine the mediating role of emotion dysregulation in this relationship.
- To explore how self- and other-related mentalizing influence affect.
Main Methods:
- Online self-report measures administered to 445 nonclinical Iranian adults.
- Utilized the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS), Mentalization Scale (MentS), and Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS).
- Employed correlational analyses and structural equation modeling.
Main Results:
- Self- and other-related mentalizing were inversely associated with emotion dysregulation.
- Emotion dysregulation mediated the relationship between mentalizing and affective states.
- Emotion dysregulation predicted higher negative and lower positive affects; motivation to mentalize had a limited direct effect.
Conclusions:
- Mentalizing capacity indirectly influences affective states via emotion dysregulation.
- Mentalizing incapacity may contribute to the development of affective difficulties.
- The findings highlight emotion dysregulation as a key mechanism linking mentalizing and affect.
