Teratogenicity

The ability of a drug to produce structural deformations and functional abnormalities in the developing embryo or the fetus is called teratogenicity, and the drug producing this effect is known as a teratogen. Background:

Gastroschisis is a congenital abdominal wall defect.
It is associated with placental abnormalities like delayed villous development and malperfusion.
These findings suggest a significant role for the placenta in gastroschisis pathogenesis.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate placental gene expression differences in gastroschisis pregnancies.
To identify specific genes and pathways affected by gastroschisis.

Main Methods:

RNA sequencing was employed to compare placental tissue transcriptomes.
Samples were obtained from pregnancies with and without gastroschisis.

Main Results:

180 coding genes exhibited differential expression between the two groups.
These differentially expressed genes mapped to various gene ontology pathways.
Observed alterations suggest a fetal-placental communication axis.

Conclusions:

Altered placental gene expression in gastroschisis may reflect fetal signaling.
These molecular changes could be integral to the development of gastroschisis.
Placental dysregulation might contribute to associated morbidities, including fetal growth restriction.
