CD56, a neural lineage marker, was studied in ameloblastoma (AM) and odontogenic keratocysts (OKC). Higher CD56 expression was observed in AM, suggesting neuroectodermal influence in odontogenic lesion pathogenesis.
Area of Science:
- Oral pathology
- Immunohistochemistry
- Neuroectodermal differentiation
Background:
- CD56 is a marker for neural lineage and neuroectodermal differentiation.
- Odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs) exhibit aggressive behavior and high recurrence rates.
- Previous studies reported high CD56 immunoreactivity in OKCs.
Purpose of the Study:
- To analyze CD56 immunoexpression in ameloblastoma (AM) and OKC.
- To investigate the neuroectodermal influence in the pathogenesis of these odontogenic lesions.
- To correlate CD56 expression with clinicopathologic parameters.
Main Methods:
- Immunohistochemical analysis of CD56 was performed.
- Fifty cases of OKC and AM were studied (25 each from tooth-bearing and molar-ramus regions).
- Five dental follicular tissues served as controls.
Main Results:
- CD56 immunopositivity was observed in 64% of AM and 36% of OKC cases.
- AM showed cytoplasmic expression in peripheral cells of odontogenic islands.
- OKC displayed continuous cytoplasmic expression in basal and parabasal cells of the cystic lining.
Conclusions:
- CD56 immunoexpression in AM and OKC may indicate neuroectodermal influence in their pathogenesis.
- CD56 expression might influence the clinical behavior and aggressiveness of odontogenic lesions.
- Correlating CD56 expression with clinical outcomes could aid in prognostic assessment.
