Summary

Whey protein supplements did not alter circulating cytokines in cancer patients undergoing treatment. However, surgery and combination therapy reduced cytokine levels, and baseline MCP-1 independently predicted mortality.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the impact of whey protein-based oral nutritional support on circulating cytokines in cancer patients.
  • To evaluate the relationship between nutritional status, inflammation, and mortality in these patients.

Main Methods:

  • Forty-six patients with solid tumors undergoing systemic treatment received two daily whey protein supplements.
  • Circulating levels of IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, MCP-1, and IP-10 were measured.
  • Nutritional status was assessed using anthropometric, instrumental, and biochemical parameters.

Main Results:

  • No significant changes in circulating cytokine levels were observed after three months of whey protein supplementation.
  • Patients with resected primary tumors showed lower baseline IL-6 and IP-10, and reduced IL-8 post-supplementation.
  • Baseline MCP-1 was identified as an independent predictor of mortality (OR 1.03).

Conclusions:

  • Whey protein-based nutritional support did not alter circulating cytokine levels in cancer patients over three months.
  • Surgery and combination treatment significantly reduced circulating cytokine levels.
  • MCP-1 warrants further investigation as an independent mortality factor in cancer patients.
