Area of Science:

  • Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
  • Periodontology
  • Dental Implantology

Background:

  • Alveolar ridge deficiencies present challenges for dental implant success.
  • Horizontal and vertical bone augmentation are crucial for optimal implant positioning.
  • Existing techniques for bone reconstruction have limitations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To present a modified ridge split technique for three-dimensional (3D) alveolar bone reconstruction.
  • To address horizontal and vertical bone defects.
  • To improve outcomes in cases of failed dental implants.

Main Methods:

  • A modified ridge split technique was employed.
  • A cortical allograft plate was used as an internal tent within the split ridge.
  • Guided bone regeneration was performed around the tented plate.

Main Results:

  • Cone beam computerized tomography (CBCT) after 5 months showed sufficient bone formation.
  • Successful reconstruction of both horizontal and vertical alveolar bone dimensions was achieved.
  • The technique was applied to a defect resulting from a failed implant removal.

Conclusions:

  • Internal cortical tenting is a potentially reliable method for 3D bone reconstruction.
  • The modified ridge split technique offers a viable solution for complex alveolar defects.
  • Further studies are warranted to validate this approach.
