Background:

  • Radiation cystitis with hematuria (RCH) is a severe complication of pelvic radiation therapy.
  • The incidence and outcomes of hospitalized RCH patients require further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the demographics and outcomes of patients hospitalized for RCH.
  • To identify predictors of mortality, length of stay, and cost in hospitalized RCH patients.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of the National Inpatient Sample (2016-2019).
  • Analysis of inpatient encounters with a primary or secondary RCH diagnosis.
  • Multivariate regression to identify predictors of mortality and length of stay.

Main Results:

  • 21,320 weighted cases of hospitalized RCH patients were identified.
  • Average age was 75.4 years; 84.7% were male. Inpatient mortality was 1.3%.
  • Older age predicted mortality; Elixhauser Comorbidity Score ≥ 3 predicted longer LOS and higher costs.

Conclusions:

  • Hospitalized RCH cases represent a significant burden on patients and healthcare.
  • An increasing trend in hospitalizations for RCH was observed.
  • Further research is needed to understand RCH causes and develop effective treatments.
