Summary

After stroke, individuals spent more time being sedentary and had fewer breaks in their sedentary behavior over three years. Baseline cognitive function did not predict later sedentary behavior in stroke survivors.

Background:

  • Sedentary behavior is a known risk factor for cardiovascular diseases.
  • Limited understanding exists regarding sedentary behavior patterns during the chronic phase post-stroke.
  • This study investigates sedentary behavior changes and cognitive influences in stroke survivors.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe the changes in short and long sedentary bouts in the first three years after stroke.
  • To determine if baseline cognitive function is an independent risk factor for sedentary behavior post-stroke.

Main Methods:

  • A sub-study of the Norwegian Cognitive Impairment after Stroke (Nor-COAST) study.
  • Sedentary behavior was measured using thigh-worn sensors (ActivPal3®) at 3, 18, and 36 months post-stroke.
  • Cognition was assessed using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA); stroke severity by NIHSS.

Main Results:

  • Total sedentary time (08:00-22:00) significantly increased from ~9.8 to 10.1 hours between 3 and 36 months post-stroke (p=0.002).
  • Older age, higher BMI, comorbidities, and poorer physical function were associated with prolonged sedentary time and bouts.
  • No significant association was found between MoCA scores and sedentary time.

Conclusions:

  • Stroke survivors exhibited increasing sedentary behavior and reduced breaks in sedentary time from 3 to 36 months post-stroke.
  • Baseline cognitive function was not found to be a predictor of subsequent sedentary behavior.
