    Background:

    • Churg-Strauss syndrome (CSS) is characterized by vasculitis, hypereosinophilia, and elevated serum IgE.
    • The precise role of IgE in CSS pathogenesis remains unclear.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the potential involvement of immunoglobulin E (IgE) in the development of vasculitis in CSS patients.

    Main Methods:

    • Sequential precipitation of patient sera using polyethylene glycol (PEG) 6000.
    • Radioimmunosorbent testing (RIST) to quantify IgE in serum precipitates.
    • Analysis of complement component C3d and C1q-binding material.

    Main Results:

    • Significant amounts of IgE were detected in serum precipitates from CSS patients, particularly after a second precipitation step (4.0% PEG).
    • No IgE-containing precipitates were found in sera from patients with other allergic diseases and high IgE levels.
    • Elevated C3d serum levels and absence of C1q-binding material were observed.

    Conclusions:

    • IgE-containing immune complexes are implicated in the pathogenesis of Churg-Strauss vasculitis.
    • These complexes likely activate the complement system via the alternative pathway.
