Healthy lifestyle behaviors in early childhood are crucial for long-term health. This study provides recommendations for caregivers on integrating physical activity, sleep, and nutrition for optimal development in young children.
Area of Science:
- Pediatrics
- Public Health
- Metabolic Health
Background:
- Early childhood is a critical period for establishing lifelong healthy habits.
- Many young children in Singapore do not meet physical activity, sedentary behavior, and sleep recommendations.
- Unhealthy lifestyles in early childhood increase the risk of non-communicable diseases.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop evidence-based recommendations for caregivers of infants, toddlers, and preschoolers (under 7 years).
- To guide the integration of beneficial activities within a 24-hour period for optimal child development and metabolic health.
Main Methods:
- The Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE)-ADOLOPMENT approach was used.
- International and national guidelines were reviewed, supplemented by literature searches up to September 2021.
- Recommendations were developed for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers.
Main Results:
- Four consensus statements were created for each age group (infants, toddlers, preschoolers).
- Statements emphasize physical activity, limited sedentary behavior, adequate sleep, and healthy eating for metabolic health.
- Integrating these activities within a 24-hour period is key for optimal results.
Conclusions:
- This set of recommendations aims to guide and encourage caregivers in Singapore.
- Promoting beneficial lifestyle activities within a 24-hour period supports child well-being.
- Adopting these recommendations can improve metabolic health and prevent future non-communicable diseases.
