    Summary

    Combined technetium-99m-MDP/gallium-67 imaging shows high predictive value for prosthetic joint loosening and infection. However, low sensitivity and specificity suggest it is not cost-effective for evaluating symptomatic prosthetic joints.

    Background:

    • Symptomatic prosthetic joints require accurate diagnosis of loosening and infection.
    • Combined technetium-99m-MDP/gallium-67 digital subtraction imaging was evaluated for diagnostic utility.

    Observation:

    • 111 patients with symptomatic prosthetic joints (hips, knees, shoulders) underwent imaging.
    • Clinical correlation included surgical assessment, cultures, and long-term follow-up.
    • Imaging demonstrated 80%-90% positive predictive value for loosening and 95% negative predictive value for infection.

    Findings:

    • The imaging technique showed good predictive values for specific conditions.
    • However, observed low sensitivities and specificities limited its overall diagnostic performance.
