Cross-Sectional Research01:50

Cross-Sectional Research

11.3K
In cross-sectional research, a researcher compares multiple segments of the population at the same time. If they were interested in people's dietary habits, the researcher might directly compare different groups of people by age. Instead of following a group of people for 20 years to see how their dietary habits changed from decade to decade, the researcher would study a group of 20-year-old individuals and compare them to a group of 30-year-old individuals and a group of 40-year-old...

Longitudinal Research02:20

Longitudinal Research

11.9K
Sometimes we want to see how people change over time, as in studies of human development and lifespan. When we test the same group of individuals repeatedly over an extended period of time, we are conducting longitudinal research. Longitudinal research is a research design in which data-gathering is administered repeatedly over an extended period of time. For example, we may survey a group of individuals about their dietary habits at age 20, retest them a decade later at age 30, and then again...

Stress Prevention and Stress Management Techniques IV01:26

Stress Prevention and Stress Management Techniques IV

28
Stress often leads to unhealthy habits like smoking, excessive drinking, and overeating, which offer short-term relief but ultimately increase long-term health risks. These behaviors create a cycle that temporarily lowers stress levels but can result in severe long-term health consequences. Breaking these habits is essential to reduce the risk of chronic diseases and improve overall well-being. Three primary changes that support better health include quitting smoking, reducing alcohol intake,...

Theory of Romantic Attachment in Adulthood

43.4K
Attachment is a long-standing connection or bond with others. While Attachment Theory was conceived in developmental psychology to describe infant-caregiver bonding, it's been extended into adulthood to include romantic relationships.

Hypothesis Test for Test of Independence01:16

Hypothesis Test for Test of Independence

3.6K
The test of independence is a chi-square-based test used to determine whether two variables or factors are independent or dependent. This hypothesis test is used to examine the independence of the variables. One can construct two qualitative survey questions or experiments based on the variables in a contingency table. The goal is to see if the two variables are unrelated (independent) or related (dependent). The null and alternative hypotheses for this test are:

Longitudinal Studies01:26

Longitudinal Studies

156
Longitudinal studies are also widely used in other medical and social science fields. For instance, in cardiovascular research, they can monitor patients' health over decades to identify risk factors for heart disease, such as high cholesterol or smoking, and evaluate the long-term effectiveness of preventive measures. Similarly, in mental health studies, researchers might follow individuals from adolescence into adulthood to understand the development and progression of conditions like...

Summary

Risky alcohol use in college students is linked to dating and unstable relationships cross-sectionally, but this association fades over time. Perceived stress about love lives was not significantly linked to risky drinking longitudinally.

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Public Health
  • Sociology

Background:

  • Risky alcohol use is prevalent among college students.
  • Bidirectional links exist between alcohol use and romantic relationship stability.
  • Longitudinal data on risky drinking, relationship status, and perceived stress in college students are limited.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine the cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between risky alcohol use and romantic relationships.
  • To investigate the relationship between risky alcohol use and perceived stress regarding romantic relationships.
  • To explore these associations in a college student population over a one-year period.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized data from the World Mental Health International College Student Survey (WMH-ICS) French cohort.
  • Included first-year college students with online survey data at baseline (n=1,624) and one-year follow-up (n=727).
  • Assessed romantic relationship status, perceived stress, risky alcohol use, and lifetime mental health disorders.

Main Results:

  • Cross-sectionally, risky alcohol use was associated with dating and unsteady relationships (aOR=2.87), but this link diminished at follow-up.
  • Risky alcohol use was not longitudinally associated with severe perceived stress regarding love lives, despite bivariate associations.
  • Multivariate models adjusted for lifetime mental health disorders were used in all analyses.

Conclusions:

  • Findings highlight the transient nature of the link between risky drinking and relationship patterns in college students.
  • The importance of considering comorbid mental health disorders in understanding these associations is underscored.
  • This research contributes to understanding the complex interplay between substance use and relationship dynamics in young adults.
