MicroRNAs

3.0K
MicroRNA (miRNA) are short, regulatory RNA transcribed from introns (non-coding regions of a gene) or intergenic regions (stretches of DNA present between genes). Several processing steps are required to form biologically active, mature miRNA. The initial transcript, called primary miRNA (pri-mRNA), base-pairs with itself, forming a stem-loop structure. Within the nucleus, an endonuclease enzyme, called Drosha, shortens the stem-loop structure into hairpin-shaped pre-miRNA. After the pre-miRNA...

Summary
This summary is machine-generated.

Low miR-451 expression is linked to colorectal cancer (CRC) progression. This microRNA shows high diagnostic potential, suggesting it could be a valuable biomarker for early CRC detection.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Molecular Biology
  • Biomarker Research

Background:

  • MicroRNA-451 (miR-451) plays a role in colorectal cancer (CRC) pathogenesis.
  • miR-451 is a potential diagnostic biomarker for CRC, but its diagnostic value requires clarification.
  • Understanding miR-451's role can identify novel therapeutic targets for CRC.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the diagnostic value of miR-451 in patients with colorectal cancer.
  • To clarify the diagnostic and prognostic role of miR-451 in CRC.
  • To assess miR-451 as a potential biomarker for early CRC diagnosis.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic literature search of Embase, PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus.
  • Meta-analysis calculating odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence interval (CI) for miR-451 expression and CRC diagnosis.

  • Evaluation of diagnostic parameters: sensitivity, specificity, and area under the curve (AUC).
  • Main Results:

    • A significant association was found between low miR-451 expression and CRC (OR = 7.59, p = 0.001).
    • High diagnostic accuracy was demonstrated: pooled sensitivity 0.95, specificity 0.83, and AUC 0.97.
    • Low miR-451 expression significantly increases post-test probability of CRC to 85% (from 50% pre-test).

    Conclusions:

    • Low miR-451 expression is strongly associated with colorectal cancer progression.
    • miR-451 demonstrates high diagnostic potency for colorectal cancer.
    • The miR-451 family shows promise as a biomarker for earlier colorectal cancer diagnosis.
