    Summary

    Hyperbaric oxygen therapy did not significantly improve visual evoked potentials in patients with multiple sclerosis. The treatment also did not halt disease progression and showed more deterioration in the treatment group.

    Background:

    • Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, progressive neurological disease.
    • Current treatments for MS aim to manage symptoms and slow disease progression.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the efficacy of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) in patients with chronic progressive multiple sclerosis.
    • To assess the impact of HBOT on visual evoked potential (VEP) latencies and disease progression.

    Main Methods:

    • A randomized controlled trial was conducted involving patients with chronic progressive multiple sclerosis.
    • Patients received hyperbaric oxygen at two atmospheres absolute or a placebo treatment.
    • Visual evoked potentials were measured to assess neurological function.
