    Summary

    Cement exposure can cause severe chemical burns due to its alkaline nature. Early surgical treatment of these caustic injuries, including immediate skin grafting, significantly reduces recovery time and hospitalization for construction workers.

    Background:

    • Cement, a common construction material, contains lime which liberates calcium hydroxide, a corrosive alkali.
    • Prolonged skin contact with cement mixtures can lead to severe chemical burns characterized by thick eschar formation.

    Observation:

    • This study presents five cases of chemical burns on the lower extremities resulting from cement mixture contact.
    • Patients with full-thickness burns required extended hospitalization for eschar separation before skin grafting could be performed.

    Findings:

    • Early surgical excision of full-thickness caustic burns followed by immediate skin grafting was investigated.
    • This approach significantly reduced the duration of hospitalization for affected patients.

    Implications:

    • Prompt surgical intervention for cement-induced chemical burns can optimize patient outcomes.
    • Accelerated recovery through early excision and grafting allows for a quicker return to work in construction-related occupations.
