Self-Report Tests of Personality

Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.

Background:

  • Chronic and recurrent spinal pain negatively impact sensorimotor integration (SMI).
  • Existing neurophysiological methods for assessing SMI are complex and not patient-centered.
  • There is a need for a validated patient-reported outcome measure for SMI in spinal conditions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop the Sensory-Motor Dysfunction Questionnaire (SMD-Q).
  • To evaluate the test-retest reliability and internal consistency of the SMD-Q in individuals experiencing recurrent spinal pain.

Main Methods:

  • The SMD-Q was developed using existing literature and expert/patient feedback.
  • The questionnaire was administered twice, seven days apart, to 20 participants (mean age 20.95 years).
  • Test-retest reliability was assessed using quadratic weighted kappa (Kw), and internal consistency using Cronbach's alpha (α).

Main Results:

  • The SMD-Q demonstrated good to excellent test-retest reliability for most items (Kw values ranging from 0.40 to >0.75).
  • One item showed moderate reliability (Kw < 0.40).
  • The questionnaire exhibited excellent internal consistency (α > 0.90).

Conclusions:

  • The pilot Sensory-Motor Dysfunction Questionnaire (SMD-Q) shows promising reliability for assessing sensorimotor integration (SMI) in recurrent spinal pain.
  • Further revisions and validation with larger cohorts are recommended.
  • The SMD-Q may offer a valuable patient-reported outcome for clinical and research settings.
