Summary

Point-of-care (POC) sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing in mobile clinics increased access to care in rural Alabama. This feasible model demonstrated provider and client satisfaction with the workflow, addressing a key health concern.

Background:

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) pose a significant health challenge in the United States, with rural areas facing particular access barriers to testing and care.
Point-of-care (POC) STI testing offers a promising solution to overcome these geographical and logistical hurdles in underserved populations.

Purpose of the Study:

To implement POC STI testing services within mobile health clinics to enhance access to care in rural settings.
To evaluate the feasibility and provider satisfaction of a nurse-led mobile clinic model for STI testing in the Blackbelt region of Alabama.

Main Methods:

Six mobile health clinics were deployed in three rural Alabama communities.
A nurse-led team utilized the Binx IO® platform for rapid POC testing of chlamydia and gonorrhea.
Focus groups were conducted with mobile clinic volunteers to assess satisfaction with the clinic workflow.

Main Results:

The implementation of mobile health clinics proved to be a feasible strategy for increasing STI testing accessibility in rural areas.
The study reported positive provider and client satisfaction with the workflow and overall service delivery.
Nurse-led teams effectively managed POC STI testing in resource-limited settings.

Conclusions:

Mobile health clinics offering POC STI testing are a viable and effective model for improving healthcare access in rural communities.
The successful implementation highlights the potential for similar models to address STI disparities in underserved populations.
Provider and client satisfaction underscore the user-friendliness and effectiveness of this approach.
