This study introduces a novel chromium-containing, cobalt-free lithium-rich manganese-based layered oxide (LRMO) for enhanced battery performance. The new material demonstrates superior capacity, stability, and rate capability, overcoming key limitations of current LRMOs.
Area of Science:
- Materials Science
- Electrochemistry
- Energy Storage
Background:
- Lithium-rich manganese-based layered oxides (LRMOs) offer high capacity and voltage but suffer from poor cycling stability.
- Phase separation and transition metal (TM) migration are critical issues hindering LRMO commercialization.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop a novel, cobalt-free LRMO material with improved electrochemical performance and stability.
- To investigate the role of chromium (Cr) doping in mitigating phase separation and enhancing structural integrity.
Main Methods:
- Synthesis of a Cr-containing Co-free LRMO (Li ypo{1.2}Mn ypo{0.54}Ni ypo{0.13}Cr ypo{0.13}O ypo{2}) with a spinel phase.
- Electrochemical characterization including charge-discharge cycling, rate capability tests, and Coulombic efficiency measurements.
Main Results:
- The Cr-doped LRMO exhibits an ultrahigh first discharge capacity of 310 mAh g ypo{-1} and an initial Coulombic efficiency of 92.09%.
- The material shows excellent cycling stability with 94.70% capacity retention after 100 cycles at 1C and minimal voltage decay.
- The introduction of Cr suppresses phase separation, prevents TM migration, and enhances Li ypo{+} diffusion.
Conclusions:
- The Cr-containing Co-free LRMO effectively addresses the phase separation issue in traditional LRMOs.
- The material demonstrates significant potential as a high-performance cathode for advanced lithium-ion batteries.
