Rous Sarcoma Virus (RSV) and Cancer

5.0K
Rous Sarcoma virus or RSV was discovered by F. Peyton Rous in the year 1911 as a filterable transmissible agent that could cause tumors in chickens. He won a Nobel Prize for this discovery in 1966. His experiments clearly demonstrated that some cancers could be caused by infectious agents and led to the discovery of many more cancer-causing viruses in animals as well as humans.
RSV is a retrovirus that contains two copies of a plus-strand  RNA genome. Its genome consists of four main open...

Summary
This summary is machine-generated.

Cutaneous angiosarcoma is a rare cancer. Early diagnosis is crucial, especially in patients with Skin of Color, as histopathology can be challenging, requiring immunohistochemistry for confirmation.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Dermatopathology
  • Surgical Pathology

Background:

  • Angiosarcoma is a rare, aggressive vascular endothelial malignancy.
  • It often presents on the head and neck, particularly in elderly individuals.
  • Cases in patients with Skin of Color are less commonly reported.

Observation:

  • A case of an 83-year-old male (Fitzpatrick skin type IV) with a scalp lesion is presented.
  • The lesion was a large, violaceous-to-black, mamillated plaque, clinically suspicious for angiosarcoma.
  • Initial histopathology was inconclusive, delaying diagnosis and management.

Findings:

  • Immunohistochemistry was essential for confirming the diagnosis of angiosarcoma.
  • This highlights the diagnostic challenges that can arise.
  • Cutaneous angiosarcoma demonstrates aggressive behavior with a propensity for recurrence and metastasis.

Implications:

  • Emphasizes the need for high clinical suspicion for angiosarcoma, especially in diverse populations.
  • Underscores the importance of clinicopathologic correlation and advanced diagnostic tools like immunohistochemistry.
  • Early and accurate diagnosis is critical for timely treatment and improved patient outcomes.
