Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify objective parameters for evaluating internal nasal valve (INV) compromise.
  • To compare CT scan measurements and acoustic rhinometry findings in patients undergoing nasal valve surgery.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of 186 internal nasal valves (INVs) in 93 patients who underwent nasal valve surgery.
  • Data included facial CT scans, acoustic rhinometry, modified Cottle test, and symptom scores.
  • Measurements included INV angle, area, volume, lateral wall thickness, septal angle, and nasal bone area via CT.

Main Results:

  • Compromised INV groups showed smaller INV areas (coronal/axial), reduced INV volume (axial), and thinner lateral walls (coronal) (P<0.05).
  • Acoustic rhinometry revealed smaller minimal cross-sectional area and volume in the compromised INV group (P<0.001).
  • Reduced INV area on axial CT and minimal cross-sectional area by acoustic rhinometry were significantly associated with INV compromise.

Conclusions:

  • The INV angle on CT scans has limitations for assessing INV compromise.
  • INV area on axial CT scans and minimal cross-sectional area via acoustic rhinometry can serve as objective parameters.
  • These objective measures aid in evaluating internal nasal valve compromise.
