The Mi Guía de Asistencia Tecnológica (MGAT) web app effectively increased assistive technology (AT) awareness and knowledge among older Latinos with physical disabilities. Participants found the MGAT accessible, usable, and valuable for enhancing daily function and autonomy.
Area of Science:
- Gerontology
- Rehabilitation Science
- Human-Computer Interaction
Background:
- Assistive technology (AT) significantly improves daily functioning for older adults.
- Low awareness of available AT is a primary barrier to its adoption.
- Older adults, particularly those with physical disabilities, need accessible information on AT.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the quality of the Mi Guía de Asistencia Tecnológica (MGAT) web app.
- To explore the user experience of older Latinos with physical disabilities interacting with the MGAT.
- To assess the MGAT's potential to increase AT awareness and adoption.
Main Methods:
- Convergent parallel mixed-method design with 12 older Latinos in Puerto Rico.
- Participants received training and used the MGAT for 30 days.
- User Mobile Application Rating Scale and individual interviews were analyzed using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis.
Main Results:
- The MGAT received high ratings in both objective (mean=3.99) and subjective (mean=4.13) quality domains.
- Qualitative feedback indicated the MGAT was accessible, usable, desirable, credible, useful, and valuable.
- The app enhanced AT knowledge, daily function, and autonomy for users.
Conclusions:
- The MGAT is a high-quality tool for increasing AT awareness and knowledge among older Latinos.
- The web app demonstrated potential to improve AT adoption and enhance independence.
- The MGAT can empower older adults with physical disabilities through accessible AT information.
