Associative Learning01:27

Associative Learning

2.1K
Associative learning is a fundamental concept in behavioral psychology, wherein a connection is established between two stimuli or events, leading to a learned response. This process is critical in understanding how behaviors are acquired and modified. Conditioning, the mechanism through which associations are formed, can be divided into two main types: classical conditioning and operant conditioning, each elucidating different aspects of associative learning.

Summary

Game-based learning (GBL) shows potential in orthodontic education, with positive learner perceptions. However, more high-quality studies are needed due to limited evidence and moderate bias risks in most research.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Education
  • Dental Education
  • Orthodontics

Background:

  • Game-based learning (GBL) is an emerging pedagogical approach.
  • Its effectiveness in specialized fields like orthodontic education requires systematic evaluation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically review the educational impact of GBL in orthodontic education.
  • To assess the effectiveness and learner perceptions of GBL interventions.

Main Methods:

  • A systematic literature search was conducted across four major databases (Scopus, PubMed, ProQuest, Google Scholar) for articles from January 2000 to December 2023.
  • Seven articles, including randomized control trials and surveys, were included after a thorough selection process.
  • Reference lists of identified articles were also reviewed for additional relevant studies.

Main Results:

  • Two randomized controlled trials (RCTs) suggested GBL is more effective than traditional methods, while one RCT found no significant difference.
  • Five GBL interventions were digital, one traditional, and one a card game.
  • Positive learner perceptions of GBL were consistently reported at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Conclusions:

  • Game-based learning demonstrates potential for enhancing learner performance and engagement in orthodontic education.
  • Integrating entertaining and educational elements in GBL is recommended.
  • Further high-quality experimental studies are necessary to overcome the limitations of current evidence, largely due to moderate bias risks in six of the reviewed articles.
