We developed a practical method for synthesizing dibromo esters from aldehydes. This efficient one-pot process is scalable and useful for creating ynolate precursors.
Area of Science:
- Organic Chemistry
- Synthetic Chemistry
Background:
- Ynolates are valuable synthetic intermediates.
- Efficient synthesis of ynolates requires access to α,α-dibromo ester precursors.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop a practical and efficient method for synthesizing α,α-dibromo esters.
- To enable a scalable and adaptable synthesis suitable for various aldehydes.
Main Methods:
- Dibromination of aldehydes.
- Oxidative esterification using iodine.
- One-pot sequential reaction execution.
Main Results:
- Successful synthesis of α,α-dibromo esters.
- Demonstrated scalability with over 30 g yield.
- Method adaptability for low-boiling point aldehydes.
Conclusions:
- The reported method provides an efficient and practical route to α,α-dibromo esters.
- The one-pot procedure enhances its utility for large-scale synthesis and diverse substrates.

Preparation of Aldehydes and Ketones from Carboxylic Acid Derivatives
Carboxylic acid derivatives like acid chlorides and esters are more easily reducible than the corresponding acids. The derivatives reduce in the presence of mild reducing agents to give aldehydes. Aldehydes can also be prepared by Rosenmund reduction, that is, the reduction of...
