Background:

Placental non-trophoblastic tumors (PNTT) are rare, with placental teratomas (PT) being exceedingly uncommon.
Less than 40 cases of placental teratomas have been documented in medical literature.
Accurate diagnosis of PT typically relies on post-delivery pathological examination.

Observation:

A mature placental teratoma (PT) was identified within the fetal membranes in a 30-year-old primigravida at 40 weeks gestation.
Prenatal ultrasound revealed fetal renal agenesis and placental abnormalities, but PT was not suspected.
Gross and microscopic examination confirmed a solid polypoid mass composed of mature squamous epithelium, skin appendages, adipose tissue, and cartilage.

Findings:

The presented case is a mature placental teratoma (PT) arising within the fetal membranes.
Placental teratomas are typically benign and do not usually cause fetal or maternal complications.
Histogenesis of placental teratomas remains poorly understood.

Implications:

Increased awareness and knowledge of placental teratomas are crucial for accurate diagnosis.
Pathological examination is the definitive method for diagnosing placental teratomas.
Further research into the histogenesis of PT may improve understanding and diagnostic approaches.
