A novel super-mini percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) technique using pediatric trocar cystostomy offers a safe, less invasive kidney stone removal alternative. This method reduces complications and recovery time, making it suitable for resource-limited settings.
Area of Science:
- Urology
- Minimally Invasive Surgery
Background:
- Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is standard for kidney stones but may require tract dilation, risking complications.
- Super-mini PCNL utilizes smaller instruments for less invasive kidney access.
- Conventional PCNL tract dilation can lead to adverse events.
Observation:
- A case report details a new super-mini PCNL technique using pediatric trocar cystostomy and ultrasound guidance.
- The procedure was successfully performed on a 55-year-old female with bilateral kidney stones within 60 minutes.
Findings:
- The novel technique provided safer access, reduced bleeding risk, and shorter recovery compared to conventional PCNL.
- No significant postoperative complications were observed, with minimal hemoglobin level changes.
Implications:
- This alternative PCNL method offers reduced invasiveness and complications, with faster patient recovery.
- It is a viable, cost-effective option for hospitals in developing countries lacking advanced PCNL equipment.
