Summary

Prostate cancer screening participation among Black men may be improved by educational interventions focusing on knowledge and shared decision-making. Addressing social determinants of health is crucial for equitable prostate cancer screening.

Background:

Prostate cancer is a leading cause of cancer death in US men, with Black men disproportionately affected.
Early diagnosis of prostate cancer significantly improves curability.

Purpose of the Study:

To identify clinical trials evaluating prostate cancer screening decision-making processes in Black men.
To understand factors influencing screening participation in this demographic.

Main Methods:

A systematic review of peer-reviewed publications from 2017-2023 was conducted.
Databases searched included PubMed, Ovid MEDLINE, CINAHL Plus, and PsychInfo.
The Critical Appraisal Skills Programme assessed evidence quality.

Main Results:

Three studies met the inclusion criteria.
Educational interventions enhancing prostate cancer knowledge and informed decision-making (IDM) may boost screening participation.
Health partner education did not consistently improve IDM for screening.

Conclusions:

Black men encounter social determinants of health barriers (racism, cost, trust) impacting health decisions.
Multifactorial interventions are necessary to overcome inequities in prostate cancer screening for Black men.
