Artificial intelligence (AI) shows promise for workplace health promotion and prevention (WHPP), particularly in risk prediction. However, current AI applications in WHPP are limited and require broader research across all health promotion fields.
Area of Science:
- Occupational Health
- Artificial Intelligence
- Public Health
Background:
- Artificial intelligence (AI) offers significant potential for workplace health promotion and prevention (WHPP) interventions.
- Despite AI's prevalence in other health fields, its application in WHPP research remains under-investigated.
- WHPP interventions focus on improving employee well-being and reducing workplace-related health risks.
Purpose of the Study:
- To systematically review the current utilization of AI in WHPP.
- To identify characteristics of AI studies in WHPP.
- To determine which WHPP fields and interventions are addressed by AI and their outcomes.
Main Methods:
- A systematic scoping review adhering to PRISMA-ScR guidelines was performed.
- Searches were conducted in PubMed, IEEE, and ACM databases for English-language, peer-reviewed studies from January 2000 to December 2023.
- Data extracted included study design, AI algorithms, WHPP fields, and intervention outcomes.
Main Results:
- Ten studies met the inclusion criteria, with risk prevention and modeling being the most common WHPP fields (n=6).
- Machine learning and deep learning algorithms were prevalent, often integrated into smartphone applications or utilizing smartphone data.
- Behavioral interventions typically lasted 8-12 weeks and included control groups; three studies assessed AI model robustness.
Conclusions:
- AI in WHPP is currently underexplored despite its potential for personalized interventions and risk prediction.
- Future research should expand AI applications across all WHPP domains, incorporate longitudinal data, and establish reporting guidelines.
- Broader investigation is needed to fully leverage AI for enhancing workplace health and safety.
